↕THE pH SCALE
Acids and Bases
Page 5 Biology · Grade 9 Advanced · Mr Mahmoud Fouad
13 Read the scale
At about 25°C: pH below 7 is acidic; 7 is neutral; above 7 is basic.
14 What does one pH step mean?
The pH scale is logarithmic: a difference of one unit corresponds to a tenfold difference in hydrogen-ion concentration.
15 Why it matters
Cells and enzymes need suitable pH conditions to work properly.

Buffers & Review
Page 6 Bring the whole lesson together.
16 What does a buffer do?
A buffer resists a large pH change when small amounts of acid or base are added.
17 Match each idea
Polar water · الماء القطبيUnequal partial charges help water interact with other substances.
Hydrogen bonds · الروابط الهيدروجينيةAttraction between water molecules shapes many water properties.
Buffers · المحاليل المنظمةHelp maintain conditions suitable for living systems.
18 Check your understanding
Explain why water is polar, distinguish a covalent from a hydrogen bond, then identify the solute and solvent in saltwater.
